How to Clean, Reshape & Store Your Straw Hat

How to Clean, Reshape & Store Your Straw Hat

A well-made straw hat is an investment — one that rewards a little care with years of shape, structure, and style. Whether you've just returned from a sun-soaked trip or are putting away your favorite boater for the season, these simple steps will keep it looking its best.

1. Spot-Clean Sweat Marks First

Sweat marks are the most common straw hat complaint — and the most avoidable. As soon as you notice discoloration on the inner band or brim, act quickly.

  • Mix a small amount of mild dish soap with cool water.
  • Dip a soft cloth or a clean toothbrush and gently work in a circular motion along the stained area.
  • Blot (don't rub) with a dry cloth to lift the residue.
  • Allow to air dry completely away from direct sunlight.

What to avoid: Never submerge a straw hat in water or run it under a faucet. Soaking loosens the weave, warps the brim, and can permanently damage the hat's structure.

2. Refresh the Surface

For general dust and light dirt, use a soft-bristled brush (a clean makeup brush works well) and sweep in the direction of the weave. A barely damp cloth can remove surface residue on tighter-woven styles. Always let the hat dry naturally before storing.

3. Reshape with Gentle Steam

If your hat has lost its form after travel or storage, steam is your best friend — but use it with a light touch.

  • Hold the hat 6–8 inches above the spout of a kettle or a handheld garment steamer.
  • Apply steam for 10–15 seconds to the area you want to reshape.
  • While the straw is still warm and pliable, gently mold it back into shape with your hands.
  • Set the hat crown-down on a clean surface and allow it to cool and firm up before handling.

Tip: Steam works on brims, pinched crowns, and minor dents. For severe damage, consult a professional hat blocker.

4. Store It the Right Way

How you store your hat matters as much as how you wear it. Follow these guidelines to keep it season-ready:

  • Store crown-up or in a hat box. Resting a straw hat on its brim for extended periods flattens and creases it.
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place. Humidity causes straw to expand and warp; excessive heat makes it brittle.
  • Avoid plastic bags. Trapped moisture accelerates mold. Use a breathable cotton bag or the original box instead.
  • Never stack heavy items on top. Even brief pressure can leave a permanent impression.

5. Travel Smart

Traveling with a structured straw hat doesn't have to mean dents and disasters. Pack socks or small accessories inside the crown to help it hold its shape. If you're checking luggage, place the hat in a hat box or protect it in the center of a soft bag surrounded by clothing.
